What is Cube Z?
As Nillumbik Shire Council works through it’s rebranding as a tourism destination and launched the Artisan Hills campaign in April 2016, the Diamond Creek Traders embarked on a massive project to work with three local artists to strengthen the branding of an area rich in arts and showcase their work in Diamond Creek.
But Cube Z, is much more than a shipping container displaying art. Through an Urban Legends campaign, led by local artists and community engagement specialist, Ixia Black, the Diamond Creek Traders Association will interact with the community to hear their stories, embellished or otherwise, on the urban stories of the area to create some mystical themes about Diamond Creek for future leverage in art and culture. By future leverage we mean art and culture local, state and even federal funding.
A converted 40 foot shipping container arrived late September 2016 to the Diamond Creek Plaza carpark, 72 Main Hurstbridge Road, and was painted by a group of volunteers, and filled with artists work. The grand opening was The Hello Show, on 2nd October, 2016. This exhibition featured work by local artists Melissa Haslam, Ixia Black, and Mirranda Burton.
This was followed by a Spirograph exhibition –on display until 4th December.
The gallery was relocated to outside the front of the Diamond Creek Community Centre on 5th December, 2016 and the Dragon exhibition was launched, and many other projects have occurred since then.
Cube Z has gained much interest from the wider community, and has even featured as a backdrop for a local boutique clothing store for promotional purposes.
